Jeremy and Meagan Cooney, from St. Augustine, are in the middle of their Dream Trip … fishing coast to coast in Florida and blogging about it for Florida Sportsman Magazine.

Their Marathon adventure included a stay at Captain Pip’s Marina and Hideaway with a couple of outings with Capt. Zach on their rental boat. They also did a tarpon trip with SeaSquared Charters.
We took them to the legendary Bahia Honda bridges, reknowned for holding large numbers of big tarpon. Armed with live crabs, we tooled around for a bit until we found lots of rolling action.
I baited two rods and Jeremy and Meagan set to drifting the crabs out to the tarpon. The current was roaring, so the bite didn’t really turn on until it calmed down a bit. About an hour into it … Meagan let out a yelp!
She followed instructions perfectly by moving to the front of the boat to fight her fish. She had a good 15-minute fight with plenty of jumps and got the fish to the boat for a release. We could see it was close to 100 pounds.
Next it was Jeremy’s turn and, as if on cue, a tarpon took his crab. He also did as instructed and moved to the front of the boat for a bit of a longer fight. Twenty mintues later, we leadered the fish before it broke off and swam away to fight another day. It looked to weigh about 70 pounds.
We set up for another set of bait drifts, but it wasn’t to be. No matter. Jeremy and Meagan where both thrilled to have hooked, faught and landed their very first tarpon with SeaSquared Charters!
