Epic fishing for Minnesota buddies

Marathon Florida Keys Fishing Report, Capt. Chris Johnson, SeaSquared Charters, February 20, 2011

Three tavern buddies from Minnesota came to Marathon Florida Keys to share some brews, some laughs and some great fishing.

Mike Caron, Tim Garner and Tom Evans share a love of fishing so they rented a house in Marathon that came equipped with a boat for their use.  Before they set out on their own, they wanted to learn a few tricks of the trade from a pro, so they spent a day with Capt. Chris Johnson and SeaSquared Charters.

We headed straight to Hawk Channel where the action has been red-hot and we were not disappointed.  They guys caught countless grouper that were released.  They kept a mess of mutton and mangrove snapper, some porgy and hogfish, including a beauty of a 16-incher.

They also caught Spanish mackerel and went 6 for 8 on kingfish ranging from 15 to 30 pounds, all on 12-pound test.  As if they needed any additional entertainment, a 4-foot baby bull shark ate one of their fish right on the surface at the side of the boat.

The trio cooked up their snapper and such and the mackerel all made its way to my smoker.  It will be sent to Minnesota for the guys to enjoy with family and friends.

I guess Tim summed up the day best with his comment, “Best fishing trip ever.”
