Florida friends enjoy some Keys dolphin fishing

Marathon Florida Keys Fishing Report – Captain Chris Johnson, SeaSquared Charters – August 2, 2010

Rod Blake, from Punta Gorda, and David Wilson, from Miami Gardens, used our lodging package with Captain Pip’s Marina and Hideaway to get away to the Keys for a little fishing.

They really wanted to go offshore for dolphin and I was so pleased the bite had turned on after a somewhat slow summer.  With DJ on vacation visiting his kids in Missouri, I took Jason Bell along as deck hand.  Born and raised in Marathon, Jason is 15, an avid angler and spearfisherman and excellent deck hand.  And, our guests always enjoy having a real Conch on the boat!

We found birds working some scattered weeds about 18 miles south of Sombrero Light and started trolling.  A couple of floaters popped up and it was game on!

Nice gaffer size dolphin hit the deck one after the next.  We even got a handsome 20-pound bull dolphin and a small wahoo.  At about noon, Rod and David looked in the fish box and exclaimed, “Wow!  We had no idea we caught that many fish.  We can go home now.”  So, we headed in early and shared some cold beers at the dock as I cleaned their dolphin for a couple of hours.  They were thrilled to cook their fish on the grill back at their unit at Captain Pip’s.

The next day, Rod and David took advantage of the rental boat that came with their lodging at Captain Pip’s.  They admitted the catching was not what it had been on the SeaSquared, but they enjoyed being out on the water one more day.  I guess David’s comments in our guest book sum it up: “Thanks for my first and not the last charter boat trip!”

See you next time, guys!
