Full combat yellowtailing for Murray and Joan

Marathon Florida Keys Fishing Report, Capt. Chris Johnson, SeaSquared Charters, April 2, 2011

Tampa anglers Murray Beatts and his wife, Joan Wuischpard, are serious about their snapper fishing.  Dead serious.  So, I was glad the bite was on for the big ones on our outing today.

We fished one of my best reef spots where both the sharks and the barracuda interfered with our catch.  After switching up to 20-pound gear, the bite was ours.  Murray and Joan landed fourteen yellowtail snapper – all large fish – with the biggest going 26 inches and more than five pounds.  Murray planned to cook some of the yellowtail in a lemon/butter/cream sauce back at their place at Conch Key Cottages.

Murray also did battle with four hefty bonito and has the bruises to prove it.  They are now resting in my shark bait freezer!

Murray had a second outing on Monday, but the wind restricted us a bit.  We fished near the Seven Mile Bridge for a half day and Murray put together a nice limit of 12- to 14-inch mangrove and yellowtail snapper.  Younger cousins of the ones he and Joan caught on Saturday, but just as tasty!
