For their first Keys trip, this trio from Woodbury MN wanted a great variety of fish rather than a great quantity.
Jim Mathews and his sons, Jake and Alex, booked a full day charter so we had plenty of time to seek out a lot of different of species for them to catch. We spent the day in the Gulf, and the crew caught an eight-pound tripletail, mangrove snapper, bluefish, jack crevalle, gag and Goliath grouper (released) and Spanish mackerel, which I smoked and sent up to Minnesota for them.
They also caught eight or nine cobia, three of which we tagged for the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research project. It’s always a treat to get your tag report back somewhere down the road to find out where that cobia ended up and how big it got.
They planned to dine on their mangrove snapper and tripletail at Castaway Restaurant in Marathon.
