Captain’s Blog – January 1, 2010 – Marathon Florida Keys – What a treat it was to kick off the new year by taking one of my favorite customers, Jim Thomasson, fishing for his beloved snappers.
Jim retreats from North Carolina to spend the winters at his home in Key Colony Beach. He and his lady friend, Sherry Black, fish with SeaSquared quite often and enjoy bringing friends and family along for the Florida Keys fishing experience.
On our New Year’s Day outing, I thought perhaps the situation with Jim and Sherry was a little different from past seasons and mentioned this to Christy that evening. Being a woman, Christy just had to get to the bottom of things, so she emailed Sherry to inquire and – yes – Jim and Sherry were married in September. Congratulations!
Back to the fishing ….
Armed with plenty of chum along with several dozen live shrimp and a horde of frozen sardines, I took Jim and Sherry to one of my bay wrecks. We self-imposed a 16-inch minimum size and caught a limit of mangrove snapper up to 20 inches. It was like a trip to the aquarium as we watched at least three keeper size gag grouper swim around the boat, taunting us with their federally mandated freedom.
We also caught nice cero and Spanish mackerel, which I have smoked for Jim and Sherry to enjoy with their various winter visitors.
I’m looking forward to the weather warming up for Jim and Sherry to get back out fishing for their favorite – the delicious hogfish!
