Scott Kazdan, from Weston FL, treated his son, Matthew, and some friends to a day of dolphin fishing to celebrate Matthew’s 11th birthday.
The crew also included Paul DeBlasis, his 11 year-old boy, Tyler, and fishing buddy Barry Surdin – all from the Ft. Lauderdale area.
Scott and his gang have been fishing with us many times. He loves his snapper fishing, but this time he really wanted to get offshore for something a little different. With the awesome dolphin run we’ve had the last week or so, I was confident we’d be able to makes his dreams come true.
We found a healthy bunch of weed lines 14 to 17 miles off Marathon and, sure enough, there were the dolphin.
The crew set to a frenzy of catching – a mix of schoolies, heavy lifters and gaffers – with the biggest fish coming in at about 15 pounds.
The two youngest anglers were doubled up a lot of the time, and we ended the day with 30 dolphin in the cooler.
But, that’s not the end of the story.
We went on to catch five wahoo. Not the biggest we’ve ever seen – in the 8- to 10-pound range – but well worthy of a delicious wahoo steak dinner! It was Matthew’s first wahoo, and he caught two!
Two-plus hours of fish cleaning … now that’s a nice cooler full of tasty dolphin (mahi mahi) and wahoo!
Happy Birthday Matthew! See you at Christmas, if not sooner!
