Know your new grouper regs for the opening of season May 1

Captain’s Blog – April 30, 2010 – Marathon Florida Keys

After a four-month closure, the recreational and commercial harvest of shallow-water Groupers will reopen tomorrow (May 1) in all Monroe County and Atlantic Ocean waters.

Each recreational harvester has a daily bag limit of three Groupers in these waters.  Three Reds are permitted, but no more than one Gag and one Black Grouper – not both – can be included in the total daily bag limit of three.

So, you can have 3 Reds … OR … 1 Gag and 2 Reds … OR … 1 Black and 2 Reds.  But, you cannot have 1 Gag, 1 Black and 1 Red.

The captain and crew of for-hire charter vessels are not permitted to keep any species of Groupers.

Tools to unhook Atlantic reef fish are required aboard all recreational and commercial vessels.

Here are the regs for Atlantic and Monroe County, direct from the FWC:

Gag and Black Grouper: 1 per harvester per day, minimum length 24″

No more than 1 fish may be Gag or Black Grouper in Atlantic and Monroe County.  Included within the 3 per harvester per day (Atlantic and Monroe County) Grouper aggregate bag limit.

ZERO daily bag and possession limit for captain and crew on for-hire vessels.

Red Grouper: 3 per harvester per day, minimum length 20″

Included within the 3 per harvester per day (Atlantic and Monroe County) Grouper aggregate bag limit.

ZERO daily bag and possession limit for captain and crew on for-hire vessels.

Check the FWC website for regulations regarding Snowy, Warsaw and all other Groupers
