Captain’s Blog – April 15, 2010 – Marathon Florida Keys – Celebrate the reopening of grouper season by participating in the Florida Keys Grouper Tournament!

It’s been a long four months with no grouper fishing.  The season reopens on May 1.  What better way to celebrate than by participating in the inaugural Florida Keys Grouper Tournament!  Captain Hook’s Marina & Dive Center and the 7 Mile Marina have joined forces to host this unique, new event set to take place on Saturday, May 1, 2010.

This tournament includes both an Angler Division and a Spearfishing Division.  Target species are red, black and gag grouper.  The heaviest fish of each species in each division determines the winners, for a potential of six winners.  First place winners only.  Cash prizes will be determined based on the number of entrants.

This is a Keyswide fishing tournament.  In order to qualify to win, all fish must be weighed in no later than 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 1.  Weigh in will take place at both Captain Hook’s and the 7 Mile Marina.

Entry fee for the Angler Division is $100 per boat, which covers up to six anglers allowed per boat.  Entry fee for the Spearfishing Division is $50 per diver, or $35 for divers under the age of 18.  Entry forms are available at Captain Hook’s and at the 7 Mile Marina.  Deadline to enter is Friday, April 30.

There will be a Captains Meeting and kickoff party with live music at 7 pm Friday, April 30 at Fat Buoyz Bar & Grill, which is located at the 7 Mile Marina.  The awards ceremony and party with live music will take place at 7:30 Saturday evening, also at Fat Buoyz.  The restaurant is offering a discounted rate of $10.95 per person for Cook-Your-Catch and encourages all tournament participants to bring their cleaned and filleted fish to have for dinner on Saturday.

Both host marinas are located in Marathon.  Captain Hook’s Marina and Dive Center is situated at MM 53 oceanside, adjacent to the Vaca Cut Bridge, phone (305) 743-2444.  The 7 Mile Marina is located at MM 47.5 bayside, just east of the Seven Mile Bridge, phone (305) 395-0546.
