Marathon Florida Keys Fishing Report, August 14, 2013

Offshore

Dolphin fishing spiked last week, with lots of larger gaffers and slammers showing up on fish racks.

Boats that could get out in the windy conditions did very well finding fish under weed lines and birds working the surface.  If history repeats itself, this fishery could last into the fall as it has the last couple of years.  We can only hope.

There are also wahoo under the larger weed patches and floating debris.

It pays to either troll deeper running lures, such as plugs, or baits on planers or downriggers around these areas, or stop and drop a wire-rigged butterfly jig down deep and retrieve it back to the boat as quickly as possible.  This will usually elicit a strike from the tiger-striped bullets.

Inshore

Inshore, the snapper bite remains pretty good, with yellowtails and mangroves both plentiful on the reef and larger muttons on the wrecks.

The wrecks are also holding plenty of amberjack and bigger jack crevalle.  And, I’ve heard of more than a couple very large smoker kings being taken by anglers trying for muttons.

Gulf and Bay

For those seeking shelter from the strong winds that prevail, the mangrove snapper bite is quite acceptable in the bay and gulf.  The inshore wrecks and grass banks are producing the best results.

Lobster hunters are having great success on the bayside, with lots of really nice size bugs up to two pounds and more.

The week’s best catches

Fishing on the Klimax for SeaSquared Charters, Capt. Chris Klimas took the Sonnier family, from Austin TX, to the reef, and the Short family, from Valrico FL, and Thomas family, from Houston, to the bay.  They all caught good numbers of mangrove and yellowtail snapper.

The SeaSquared provided shark fishing adventures for the Grzejka family, from Haymarket VA, the Largey brother and sister duo, from Eustis FL, and the Carroll family, from Lakeway TX.  Fishing on the reef and in the bay for mangroves and yellowtails were the Brennalt family, from Hobe Sound FL, the Twiss family, from Reading MA, the Fletcher family, from Odessa FL and the Wise family, from Melbourne Beach FL.
